This past weekend, December 3rd, the English Cafe hosted the second annual English Presentation Contest at Kagawa University. 28 contestants  ranging from first year to graduate and international students took part. Divided into two groups, the students prepared their best slide shows and delved into a multitude of topics. After much deliberation and consternation, the judges awarded prizes to the top performers of the day. Each group had two third place finishers, a second place presenter and an overall winner. The award winners were given ¥1,000, ¥3,000 or ¥5,000 book vouchers respectively, redeemable in the school store. It was a wonderful display from many students who have put a lot of work into improving their English abilities. Keep an eye out for posters for next year’s contest if you’re interested in competing next time.

Thursday October 27th, the English Cafe celebrated Halloween during the weekly English Lunch Conversation activity. Costumes and games were a common sight as both students and staff took part in the festivities. After a quick bite to eat, the fun began with a round of Doubt where groups tried to figure who the odd one out was based on clues.

                                                      Hmmmm….who doesn’t belong?

After that, things really came a bit unraveled as teams competed to make the best toilet paper mummy within five minutes. A lot of spinning, wrapping and mummifying later the results were in. Kevin, an International Exchange student from Germany, and his team proved that they were the best embalmers as their performance was judged the most mummy-like.

Kevin in all his mummified glory!

It was a great activity and the cleanup was quick and easy with all the participants chipping in a helping hand.

A few more mummies that can barely contain their excitement!

It was a great event and everyone involved had a lot of fun. The English Cafe Volunteer Staff did a great job organizing and leading everything. We at the English Cafe can’t wait until next year to see what spooky and raucous shenanigans the students of Kagawa University get into.

In June of 2015, the English Cafe hosted an Origami Party for students and teachers. The event, which took place during an English Lunch Conversation, was lively and educational for many. Not only did participants try making various creations out of the origami paper, there was also a competition as well. Each entrant into the competition fastidiously designed and crafted their own paper airplanes. Once complete, the lightweight aviation devices took to the skies to see which could come closest to the final destination.

November 29th, 2015 was a day of challenge and triumph for 30 students at Kagawa University. After months of preparation, the students were finally able to attempt the Speaking and Writing TOEIC test. All of the students performed admirably and demonstrated immense growth in their English abilities over the course of preparations. Keep an eye out for similar opportunities if you would like to try in the future or inquire at the English Cafe.

Starting in January the English Cafe will be offering two new workshops for any students interested in expanding their English abilities. The new workshops will be supplemental study for any classes students are currently taking. January 12th will be the first of the weekly English Media Afternoon lessons. This lesson will use various forms of media such as movies, music and literature to help build on the foundation students have. It will be held every Tuesday during the 4th period time slot of 14:40-16:10.

In addition to English Media Afternoon, the English Cafe will also be offering an incentive to join the Coffee Break English sessions. Held Monday and Wednesday mornings from 10:00-11:00, Coffee Break English will supply complimentary coffee and tea to those wishing to join. The timing of the workshop is purposely staggered between the 1st and 2nd period lesson end/start time so as to allow the maximun number of people to take part. Students of all English levels are encouraged to stop in for some converstaion practice.

As well as offering these new workshops, the English Cafe will also host additional TOEFL Speaking Practice during the Tuesday lunch time slot that was previously dedicated to TOEIC SW preparation.

Thursday January 28th is the school year finale for both the English Lunch Conversation and English Roundtable. These events will not be held after January, but other lessons will continue until a later date. Come and share in one final meal with the Native English Speakers before settling in to enjoy the last English Roundtable.
